Your baby at 27 weeks
Your baby is the size of a cauliflower. Your little one will gain about 455 g (1 lb) during the next month. This week baby is up to 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) from crown to rump and weighs about 900 g (2 lb). Though growing quickly, baby’s brain and lungs are still immature. Luckily, there are still 13 more weeks to get ready for the outside world.
After being fused shut for more than four months, your baby's eyelids can open again. Along with the visual part of the brain being active and most eye structures complete, this means that your little one can see lights and shadows.
Just like babies in their mothers' arms, your little one gets lulled to sleep by rocking. Even running errands can feel like rocking to your baby; thanks to the amniotic fluid, all baby feels is gentle swaying.
Your pregnancy at 27 weeks
Right on target.
Your breasts will keep changing throughout your pregnancy (and beyond). Many women find that the areola, the dark part of the breast that surrounds the nipple, continues to change as well. In the first trimester, your areola probably became darker. Now, the dark pigmented skin may even extend beyond the areola to create a secondary areola, covering up to half the breast. It's a temporary change that will probably disappear by your baby’s first birthday.
If you're like most pregnant women, you have an extremely vivid–even bizarre–night life. The dramatic dreams of pregnancy may be due to the extra hormones coursing through your body. They may also be your mind's way of dealing with the range of thoughts and emotions that you're experiencing.
Did you know?
The taste buds have developed and your baby can now taste differences in amniotic fluid, based on your daily menu. Some babies will respond to your spicy food by becoming more active or hiccuping!
