Keeping one step ahead of complications, and when to call the doctor

USEFUL HEALTH REMINDERS

Unless you have a medical condition that is likely to affect your baby or your pregnancy, or you’re at high-risk for any other reason, there is no need to worry about complications. However, every pregnancy is different and you may have symptoms this time that you didn’t suffer from the first time around.
So it’s worth keeping a checklist to hand in case you have any worries over the next few months. Let your doctor or midwife know if you experience any of the following:

- Vaginal bleeding or spotting

- Watery discharge that you suspect might be your “waters”

- Persistent contraction-like abdominal pain

- Severe headaches that persist over several hours

- Visual disturbances such as blurring or double vision

- Fainting or dizziness

- Weight gain of more than one kilogram (2 pounds) a week.

- Severe pain above the stomach, under the rib cage

- Swelling or puffiness of the face, eyes or hands

- Persistent vomiting that continues over several days and occurs more than two or three times a day

- Signs of infections (fever, chills, a burning sensation while urinating, or diarrhoea)

- After the 20th week, a change in or absence of foetal movement for more than 24 hours.
