Article Summary
When a tooth is coming in, babies may wake frequently in the night - if they can get to sleep in the first place! Here are a few suggestions for soothing your little one, and ensuring a peaceful night for the whole family.
SLEEP teething & sleeping:
There’s something quite wonderful in peeping in to watch your children sleeping. They look so calm and peaceful. But you’ll probably remember from your first child that teething can upset sleeping patterns.
So, be ready for your little daughter’s sleeping pattern to be slightly altered over the next few months whenever she is teething. She will find it hard to fall asleep and might be waking up more frequently at night.
Nonetheless, do try to stick to the regular bedtime routine that you have in place. If you divert even a little, you may have a hard time getting back on track in the future. And your older child may also react if there are changes to the family bedtime routines. So, do try to stick to them. Help your baby by giving her something cold to chew on, such as a gel-filled teething ring, or a chilled wet washcloth.
Since your baby so clearly loves listening to the sound of your voice, try singing a lullaby, or just talking to her in a soft, calming voice whenever she finds it difficult to get off to sleep. This may help your baby forget her tooth and soothe herself to sleep.
Remember that your new baby may be going through her teething process very differently from your older child. However, if your child cries excessively, cannot fall asleep at all and has a high temperature, do contact your doctor for advice.
